ROSE WINDOW

A rose window, also known as Catherine window is a term generally used for circular windows, but especially for those which are found in gothic churches. These windows are also called the wheel windows generally glazed with stained glass. There are many examples of the circular windows in the Romanesque period, but the one which I admire the most are rose windows at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Chartres.

The cathedral features three rose windows, with outward radiating circular patterns. They all are made to depict a story through its patterns and colors used. Let’s discuss the North Rose window to understand the concept of these windows. Each detail of rose window was carefully planned to give the message to the viewers. the colors used depicts the characteristical meanings i.e. the blue color depicts the purity, and of the Virgin Mary, and the red color depicts the blood of Jesus. Basically, the theme of the window is the story of mother Mary and Jesus Christ birth.

Just as the colors tell a story, the shapes used also depicts symbolism. The inner circle depicts Mary and Jesus, and the twelve no each of different surmounted shapes depicts the angels protecting them from evil powers.

As shown in images, the rose windows of Notre Dam are strikingly beautiful. The cathedral was built by people who were illiterate, so they tried to depict the story through the colors and artworks. This is the perfect example to study that how colors and shapes can be used to visually connect the viewers to space.
